Deadly "knockout game": what it is and why teens are playing it
A violent stunt is growing in popularity among teenagers. The so-called "knockout game" involves assaulting people without warning, and it is claiming lives.
The victims of the brutal game are chosen at random. Defenseless and unsuspecting people are attacked by groups of teens who have one goal in mind: to knock the victim out with one punch.
"one-hitter quitter," "knock em' and drop em," "point em' out and knock 'em out" are all names for a disturbing trend now drawing concern nationwide.
In pittsburgh, a teacher was punched so hard he collapsed head first into the concrete curb. A man in brooklyn was also knocked unconscious. And even women are being attacked.
There have been seven recent cases in new york city alone. And the game has turned fatal in at least four documented attacks -- in syracuse, N.Y.; st. Louis; chicago; and hoboken, N.J., site of the latest fatal attack.
Boys -- seen in video from a security camera after the incident -- have been charged with the murder. They are just 13 and 14 years old.
Jeffrey butts, who specializes in youth criminal justice at john jay college, said, "we know from brain studies that the part of your brain that gets fired up through excitement and thrill-seeking actually develops more quickly and fires up more quickly than the other part of your brain, which comes along a few years later and is about judgment and discretion."
He says there's no real pattern to the way the attackers choose their victims, but they are always alone, and they stand out.
"the victims are someone who the young people consider to be an 'other,'" butts explained. "that could be a racial difference, it could be a religious difference, it could be an age difference, it just could be a class difference."
Nothing in the so-called "knockout game," is about a fair fight. So if it's not about toughness, if it's not about courage, then what is it about?
Butts said, "teenagers get involved in this game to prove their manhood and, ironically, what they ultimately end up doing is proving that they're still children."
It's hard to tell how widespread this issue is, special correspondent john miller said on "CBS this morning." "if you look for it in the statistics, there's no cutout for the knockout game in the numbers; they're categorized as assaults, so you can't search backwards for them effectively.
Miller continued, "and there's another problem, (new york) police commissioner ray kelly here said yesterday, 'we're going to be talking to the health department to see if there may be more cases than we're aware of.' one of the first things you forget when you're knocked out cold is what it was that knocked you out. If you're in a fight for five minutes, you might remember: 'I was in a fight, and then I woke up on the ground.'
"but if you're just walking down the street and the next thing you know, you're on the sidewalk and you don't know how you got there, there could be cases that [police are] not aware of. When I talked to chiefs around the country yesterday, this was just below their radar, it's just coming up in a few cities."
What is the 2020 COD game called? Details revealed for 'call of duty: black ops cold war'
"call of duty: modern warfare" has remained fresh because of the introduction of "warzone" and additional multiplayer maps, but it's nonetheless time to start looking ahead to what activision's 2020 release will offer.
Over the past couple of weeks, official hints of what the game is based on have been teased. Most have been in the form of nonsensical riddles, sprinkled out to the desperate COD community like fish meal flakes to goldfish.
On wednesday, activision finally confirmed the game's title: "call of duty: black ops cold war." the trailer released by the company along with the name announcement was cryptic, revealing few obvious clues as to the specifics of how the game will play out (particularly on the multiplayer side) while also providing a general thematic overview for the game.
Here's a look at what we know (and think we know) about the upcoming 2020 "call of duty" game:
What is COD 2020 called?
As announced wednesday, the "call of duty" game for 2020 is called "call of duty: black ops cold war."
When is the full reveal for 'black ops cold war'?
At the end of wednesday's trailer, activision announced there would be a "worldwide reveal" for the game on aug. 26. There will likely be additional details concerning the game released in a flurry following that date.
Is there a 'black ops cold war' trailer?
While a full trailer for the actual game has not yet been pushed out, activision on wednesday provided a two-minute teaser video. The clip is composed mostly of historical footage from the soviet era, warning against enemy inflitration of the U.S. Government. In other words, business as usual for a "black ops" title.
Who are the developers for the next 'call of duty'?
Treyarch and raven software have teamed up to create the game. Treyarch was not originally supposed to be the lead on the game's development, but internal upheaval reportedly led the master of the "black ops" formula to take control.
What is the release date for 'call of duty: black ops cold war'?
The release date has not been announced but should be well ahead of the 2020 holiday season. It will be out later than the 2019 version of the game, which released aug. 23, 2019.
Why gods & monsters is now called immortals fenyx rising
After taking stock of what the game ought to be about, ubisoft adjusted the name of gods & monsters to better reflect the narrative shift.
On september 10, 2020 at 12:45PM PDT
Developed by the team behind assassin's creed odyssey, immortals fenyx rising is scheduled to release on december 3. The game was previously known as gods & monsters, which, yeah, is quite the name change.
Now look, I love the new name. I'm happy for the change to such an unusual combination of words. Google is an unholy beast that I repeatedly try and fail to understand--it's hard to come up with that perfect headline that accurately advertises what my article is going to be about, catches the eye of a reader who's looking through a sea of search results, and is promoted thanks to google's ever-changing parameters of ideal search terms. So it helps when I'm writing about something that doesn't have a name that's already similar to something else. And do you know how many games, books, movies, and TV series already have some variation of "gods and monsters" in their title? Far more than "immortals fenyx rising," that's for sure.
But, my very specific use case aside, there's still the question of why ubisoft made the change in the first place. The developer probably doesn't care about my google-related woes. So after playing through a two-hour demo of immortals fenyx rising, I sat down with game director scott phillips to ask him about the new name. Turns out, immortals fenyx rising represents a shift in narrative focus that occurred over the past year.
"at the end of 2019, we got the chance to have more time with the game," phillips told me. "so all the directors, all the team, we got together, played through the entire game, looked at, 'okay, what do we want to do narratively? What do we want to do visually, artistically? And what do we want to do gameplay wise?' so as we developed that, as we figured out where we wanted to go, narratively, one of the things we wanted to do was put a bigger emphasis on fenyx and fenyx's journey through this adventure, and fenyx's interaction with the gods, and the gods as sort of this meta context of the unreliable narrators on top of it. And so we really wanted to make that the centerpiece of the game."
As the centerpiece for the game, fenyx is presented as more than a blank slate protagonist. I didn't get to see much of who they are in the demo, but phillips filled me in on their backstory and motivations.
"early on in the game and the adventure, as prometheus is telling the story of fenyx, fenyx is on a ship full of soldiers coming from margolis," phillips said. "they're shipwrecked. They're lost on the coast of this golden isle, this mysterious island, and early on fenyx encounters hermes, one of the greek gods. And hermes conjures this prophecy that says that fenyx will be the only person that can save the greek gods from the destruction of typhon, their ultimate enemy."
He continued: "fenyx goes on a journey and I don't want to spoil too much, but essentially fenyx starts off as what's called a sword bearer--sort of the lowest rung of soldiers who really just carry gear rather than being a big warrior. But throughout the course of this game, fenyx begins to accept this prophecy and has his or her own challenges with how they come to terms with being this hero, and how the gods see fenyx as this hero. Initially [the gods] are sort of doubtful, saying, 'oh, this is a human. How can they possibly help us?' but obviously fenyx will, through the course of the journey, prove their worth."
The entirety of immortals fenyx rising is narrated by zeus and prometheus, both of whom add a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor to the game.
Not one to pass up on the obvious, I did ask if fenyx's name (which is pronounced like "phoenix") has any bearing on this prophecy and thus the plot of the game. Do they gain the ability to rise from the dead? Is fenyx the reincarnated form of a god? Though he did laugh, phillips wasn't able to answer my question. All he said was: "that's something I wouldn't want to get into in terms of spoiler-y territory, but something like that would make sense." so I feel like there could be something there, but I don't know for sure. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
Phillips was far more forthcoming in terms of how players will be able to customize fenyx. Similar to eivor in ubisoft's upcoming assassin's creed valhalla, fenyx can be played as either male or female. You get a bit more agency in how they look, though, being able to choose fenyx's body type, voice, facial hair, as well as skin, eye, and hair color. You can get pretty creative with it too--phillips threw out blue and green skin colors as an example.
Fenyx is yours to customize when it comes to their gender, physical appearance, and armor.
You won't be stuck with your choices at the start either; fenyx rising allows you to adjust fenyx's appearance whenever you want. "you'll be able to re-customize your look in the barber chair of the gods, where you'll get to change your full look," phillips said. "hermes gives you a nice little explanation of what [the chair] is used for--it's for how the gods transformed themselves to look like other things when they rip their skin off, and change the way they look. So, he sort of introduces it in this lighthearted, but also a bit grotesque way of how you're customizing yourself."
He continued: "so fenyx is definitely a presence in the narrative herself or himself, since it's a fully customizable player character. You will interact with multiple gods throughout the course of the game. There are npcs in the world, but they're limited. And they're not necessarily a part of your main quest. This is a story really about fenyx, and the gods, and their connection. So while prometheus and zeus provide the overall context and the narrative--this is a story being told by prometheus to zeus--you will journey as fenyx through this. And then these two contexts do meet at a later point in the game, and really connect and wrap things together."

Since march 2018, the game has become increasingly popular in the gaming community, as youtubers such as dantdm, dashiegames, denis, kindly keyin, john wolfe, lightningbluedragon, true entertainer and vividplays channel have played it.
The game is currently on version 1.7.3 released on april 18, 2019 for the mobile and version 1.2 released on march 21, 2019 ,for the PC version.
Gameplay
The player finds themselves waking up in a bed in a room they don't recognize. They have been locked up in an old, decrepit house by granny, a crazy old woman (or demon) who hunts her prey with a bloody baseball bat. They must explore and find items and tools to help them open the various locks granny keeps on her front door, all while outrunning her pursuit and hiding in the beds, coffins, and wardrobes found in the various rooms of the house.
In their mission to unlock the front door, they'll also stumble upon a garage at the bottom of the house which holds a functional, albeit disassembled car. Should they so choose, they could abandon their original objective and instead focus on using the parts that they find to repair and fuel the car, which can then be used as an alternate escape method.
Along the way, they'll also run into the many other secrets that granny keeps hidden behind locked doors. Her pet spider makes an appearance as a secondary antagonist, holed up in a cage at the very top of the house. Additionally, a particularly investigative player might find remnants of a broken family, or worse, the remains of granny's last victim. They will come across her second big pet, the crow kept in a secret room connected to the meat room and the cellar swamp.
Will the player be able to escape their prison in the five days granny has so generously granted them, or will they succumb to her never-ending chase and face their doom in the walls of the house?

What is 'roblox?' game leaves mother shocked as 6-year-old finds 'sex room'
An online platform that lets players create and explore virtual worlds—dubbed the "number one gaming website" for kids—has left one mother shocked after her 6-year-old daughter entered a so-called "sex room" level showing dozens of virtual characters engaging in forms of intercourse.
Footage of the avatars' simulated sex on roblox, obtained by australian parenting advice website kidspot, was recorded by a sydney woman identified as "peggy" who discovered that her daughter poppy had been invited into the X-rated room after adding a stranger on the game by mistake.
"I was sitting next to her and noticed out of the corner of my eyes that one of the characters [had] breasts, so it made me look closer," the mother told kidspot. "luckily she had absolutely no idea what she was looking at, but I would hate to think about what would have been said to her. I explained that they were not kids like her and that they were actually adults being naughty."
Peggy, who was forced to update the security settings on her daughter's roblox account to protect her from adult content, said that she reported the sex room and that it has now been removed.
But a youtube search shows there have been numerous instances of controversial material being uploaded to the game since it launched in 2005—including levels that have been designed to look like strip clubs and others that allow roblox players to go through the motions of a school shooting. The roleplay game, popular with children aged 8 and over, is available on PC, mac, ios, android and xbox.
In the wake of the incident, kidspot has advised parents around the world to pay more attention to what their children are playing online. "you should be aware of what they are doing and who they are interacting with, so keep that communication open and try to monitor their gameplay," the site stated.

In a statement to newsweek, a roblox spokesperson said: "we were outraged to learn that roblox's community policies and review process were subverted to publish inappropriate content.
"A roblox game, which can be built from millions of building blocks, can be vast. Before a game is published, our moderation team reviews all content uploaded into the game—such as photos, videos, and sound files. While we can't review everything that has been built within the game, we do react quickly to inappropriate content once it is published.
"in this case, the offending game was taken down immediately after we became aware of it, and the developer that built that game has been banned from the platform. We have zero tolerance for this behavior. Our work to ensure a safe platform is always evolving and remains a top priority for us."
The title is similar in appearance to the gaming phenomenon minecraft, which also gives players the ability to create levels filled with houses, vehicles and "anything else you can imagine" using building blocks or computer code.
Roblox users, can search for other players' levels, create a character and a username and can interact using forums, in-game chatrooms or via personal messaging.
The game contains a virtual currency known as "robux" for users over the age of 13 that can be earned while playing or purchased with real-word cash. Under its privacy policy, roblox says anyone under the age of 13 needs to provide a parent's email address for verification. And while it has not yet commented on peggy's case, the developers appear aware there is the potential for abuse.
"while the imagery on roblox has a blocky, digitized look, parents should be aware that some of the user-generated games […] may include themes and/or imagery that may be too intense for young or sensitive players," a parental safety guide warns. Under a section for predatory behavior, it advises: "talk to your child about online grooming, including what it is and what to watch out for."
In may this year, the website was reportedly blocked in the united arab emirates.

Tennis
Tennis, original name lawn tennis, game in which two opposing players (singles) or pairs of players (doubles) use tautly strung rackets to hit a ball of specified size, weight, and bounce over a net on a rectangular court. Points are awarded to a player or team whenever the opponent fails to correctly return the ball within the prescribed dimensions of the court. Organized tennis is played according to rules sanctioned by the international tennis federation (ITF), the world governing body of the sport.
Tennis originally was known as lawn tennis, and formally still is in britain, because it was played on grass courts by victorian gentlemen and ladies. It is now played on a variety of surfaces. The origins of the game can be traced to a 12th–13th-century french handball game called jeu de paume (“game of the palm”), from which was derived a complex indoor racket-and-ball game: real tennis. This ancient game is still played to a limited degree and is usually called real tennis in britain, court tennis in the united states, and royal tennis in australia.
The modern game of tennis is played by millions in clubs and on public courts. Its period of most rapid growth as both a participant and a spectator sport began in the late 1960s, when the major championships were opened to professionals as well as amateurs, and continued in the 1970s, when television broadcasts of the expanding professional tournament circuits and the rise of some notable players and rivalries broadened the appeal of the game. A number of major innovations in fashion and equipment fueled and fed the boom. The addition of colour and style to tennis wear (once restricted to white) created an entirely new subdivision of leisure clothing. Tennis balls, which historically had been white, now came in several hues, with yellow the colour of choice. Racket frames, which had been of a standard size and shape and constructed primarily of laminated wood, were suddenly manufactured in a wide choice of sizes, shapes, and materials, the most significant milestones being the introduction of metal frames beginning in 1967 and the oversized head in 1976.
While tennis can be enjoyed by players of practically any level of skill, top competition is a demanding test of both shot making and stamina, rich in stylistic and strategic variety. From its origins as a garden-party game for ladies in whalebone corsets and starched petticoats and men in long white flannels, it has evolved into a physical chess match in which players attack and defend, exploiting angles and technical weaknesses with strokes of widely diverse pace and spin. Tournaments offer tens of millions of dollars in prize money annually.
History
Origin and early years
There has been much dispute over the invention of modern tennis, but the officially recognized centennial of the game in 1973 commemorated its introduction by major walter clopton wingfield in 1873. He published the first book of rules that year and took out a patent on his game in 1874, although historians have concluded that similar games were played earlier and that the first tennis club was established by the englishman harry gem and several associates in leamington in 1872. Wingfield’s court was of the hourglass shape and may have developed from badminton. The hourglass shape, stipulated by wingfield in his booklet “sphairistiké, or lawn tennis,” may have been adopted for patent reasons since it distinguished the court from ordinary rectangular courts. At the time, the marylebone cricket club (MCC) was the governing body of real tennis, whose rules it had recently revised. After J.M. Heathcote, a distinguished real tennis player, developed a better tennis ball of rubber covered with white flannel, the MCC in 1875 established a new, standardized set of rules for tennis.
Meanwhile, the game had spread to the united states in the 1870s. Mary outerbridge of new york has been credited with bringing a set of rackets and balls to her brother, a director of the staten island cricket and baseball club. But research has shown that william appleton of nahant, massachusetts, may have owned the first lawn tennis set and that his friends james dwight and fred R. Sears popularized the game.
An important milestone in the history of tennis was the decision of the all england croquet club to set aside one of its lawns at wimbledon for tennis, which soon proved so popular that the club changed its name to the all england croquet and lawn tennis club. In 1877 the club decided to hold a tennis championship, and a championship subcommittee of three was appointed. It decided on a rectangular court 78 feet (23.8 metres) long by 27 feet (8.2 metres) wide. They adapted the real tennis method of scoring—15, 30, 40, game—and allowed the server one fault (i.E., two chances to deliver a proper service on each point). These major decisions remain part of the modern rules. Twenty-two entries were received, and the first winner of the wimbledon championships was spencer gore. In 1878 the scottish championships were held, followed in 1879 by the irish championships.
There were several alterations in some of the other rules (e.G., governing the height of the net) until 1880, when the all england club and the MCC published revised rules that approximate very closely those still in use. The all england club was the dominant authority then, the british lawn tennis association (LTA) not being formed until 1888. In 1880 the first U.S. Championship was held at the staten island cricket and baseball club. The victor was an englishman, O.E. Woodhouse. The popularity of the game in the united states and frequent doubts about the rules led to the foundation in 1881 of the U.S. National lawn tennis association, later renamed the U.S. Lawn tennis association and, in 1975, the U.S. Tennis association (USTA). Under its auspices, the first official U.S. National championship, played under english rules, was held in 1881 at the newport casino, newport, rhode island. The winner, richard sears, was U.S. Champion for seven consecutive years.
Tennis had taken firm root in australia by 1880, and the first australian championships were played in 1905. The first national championships in new zealand were held in 1886. In 1904 the lawn tennis association of australasia (later of australia) was founded.
The first french championships were held at the stade français in 1891, but it was an interclub tournament that did not become truly international until 1925; the french federation of lawn tennis was established in 1920. Other national championships were inaugurated in canada (1890), south africa (1891), spain (1910), denmark (1921), egypt (1925), italy (1930), and sweden (1936). In 1884 a women’s championship was introduced at wimbledon, and women’s national championships were held in the united states starting in 1887.
