With the release of grand theft auto online’s new casino update, los santos denizens now have a new go-to joke. Many players are saying they’re gaining digital gambling addictions, and are getting hooked on everything from blackjack to horse racing. Some even say they’re losing all their in-game money participating in the new activities.
To be clear, much of the chatter online from fans actually playing the new content is positive — folks like that they can jump into the new stuff without needing to be rich. So when people say they’re getting “addicted,” they mostly seem to mean it in a positive way. For GTA online, the ease of entry is a change of pace: generally, fans complain that it takes a lot of money or time to enjoy new additions to the game.
The casino DLC, on the other hand, lowers the price of entry, literally and metaphorically.
“A player at any level can walk in and buy any small amount of chips,” said zack zwiezen, GTA online expert (and former colleague) on twitter. “even just 500 chips or so with a little pocket change. They can then sit down and gamble and have fun for an hour and maybe win some GTA$.
Something that I find interesting is that most folks worrying about GTA online's casino and how exploitative it might be don't realize how nice it is compared to other parts of the game.
“compare this to the usual way updates work in GTA online,” he continued. “players would need to drop millions on new expensive buildings, to then grind for hours and days to earn more money to buy new expensive cars. And this content was locked behind needing friends to help and grinding.”
Lowering the gates like this seems to have helped GTA online tremendously this week. For about 48 hours after the casino was added, some players were reporting connection issues and difficulty hopping into matches, as the player numbers seemed to swell. But now that the dust has settled, people say they’re having a great time.
Although some are apparently losing it all in the process.

“I HAVE NOTHING LEFT,” reads a top-voted screenshot on the GTA online subreddit. Actually, the subreddit is full of memes where people commiserate over losing vast amounts of digital money in the casino.
Given that the casino DLC mimics gambling and players can technically buy shark cards with real-world money, discussions around the morality of this addition are cropping up on the web.
These conversations are partially spurred by growing concerns around exploitative practices in the video game industry, such as loot boxes. It brings into question the motivations behind making GTA’s casino easier to play: if more people are getting through the door, will a higher number of people feel incentivized to drop money once their in-game dollars runs out? According to trollingtheherd, who shared their method to reddit in july following the opening of the casino, if hennagin's steed is in the second position on the list against a horse with the same odds above it, it's very likely to be the winner.
You can keep backing out of the menu to find this, but sometimes the game may make you wait a minute or two after repeatedly exiting the game.
When the horse with the lowest odds is not priced at evens, though, the chances of horse three or four winning also increases.

GTA online players are waiting for the casino update to go live on PS4, xbox one and PC.
The grand theft auto 5 online casino update is tipped to have a june 20 release date at the earliest.
But ahead of the launch, one fan believes GTA online's casino will launch alongside red dead-style horse racing.
According to prominent GTA youtube content creator mrbossftw (via daily star), the casino will have its very own horse racing track out the back.
It's speculated that players will be able to bet on horse racing and potentially even ride the horses.
With rockstar's expertise in this area, it's almost surprising that horse riding hasn't arrived sooner.
Actually, considering it's taken this long for rockstar to open the casino, perhaps it's not that surprising, after all.

The casino has been in GTA online since the game launched almost six years ago, although the sign on the outside has always said that it's opening soon.
After years of waiting, a recent GTA 5 online patch removed the "opening soon" sign, much to the delight of fans.
And the good news doesn't end there, because construction cones were placed near the front entrance.
Rockstar would later confirm plans to open the casino in a post on twitter.

With GTA updates typically launching on thursdays, the casino could open as early as june 20.
Others have speculated that the casino will launch alongside a new update in early july.

GTA online's casino desperately needs red dead online's horses and poker
The diamond casino's poker and ponies don't shine that bright. But why?
I've visited GTA online's new diamond casino, and as a gambling fan (in games, for fake money), I've already got a few complaints.
The slot machines are a bit basic—there's no multi-line bets and while some have their own specific sound effects, they're all roughly the same machines with different paint jobs. The roulette is handled well but personally I find watching a ball spin around a real bore. There's a cap on how many chips you can buy—20,000 for walk-ins and 50,000 for VIP members. Honestly, this is probably a good idea, since you can buy casino chips with GTA cash, and you can buy GTA cash for real money, making this fake gambling, potentially, real gambling.
At the same time, though, this is a game where most players are in-game multi-millionaires, and it's hard to feel like a high-roller when you're limited to a relatively small pile of chips.
Mainly though, I'm severely disappointed in the horses and the poker.
I get why the horse racing sucks and looks fake: it's a throwback to the original inside track from GTA: san andreas. Inside track is a betting shop where CJ can put some money on the ponies, and then watch the side-scrolling race on a TV monitor. This is exactly that: janky looking horses racing from left to right and shifting positions, like the carnival game where you shoot a stream of water into a target to make your horse move.
And it's cute, don't get me wrong. But it's hard to watch the horse races at the diamond without thinking about the thousands of hours of programming and animation that went into the horses in rockstar's other big game: red dead redemption 2.
All I can think is, hey, why not get those beautiful ponies in here? GTA and RDR are both cinematic experiences. Real horse racing is dreadfully exciting (if you can try not to focus on the horses getting beaten by their jockeys while they run). So, why I am watching a shitty side-scrolling horse race and not a beautiful, dramatic, cinematic, realistic horse race? Because of a throwback joke? If we can't get RDR2 on PC, can't we at least look at its horses?
I'll grant that I'm making it sound simple when it's obviously not as easy as typing 'import rdr2_horses; set doacoolrace==true,' but watching all the horsing around in RDR2 makes a person envious.
Even if you like the janky new inside track, I think we can all agree that GTA online's poker just 100 percent completely sucks a butt. It's three card poker. Three card poker. What the hell? Three card poker isn't a terrible game in and of itself, but RDR2 has actual texas hold 'em. I marched into the diamond expecting to sit down at a proper poker table in a proper poker room and lose all my money. I am incredibly disappointed (though I still lost all my money).
I haven't played RDR2 myself, but I played red dead redemption and its poker was great. I used to fire up the game and play it for hours just for the poker. I can only assume RDR2's texas hold 'em (which was made available in red dead online a couple months ago) is good, too.
So why the heck isn't it in the diamond, along with some sweet ponies to watch? Feels like a real missed opportunity to master horse anatomy and design proper poker for one game and then put flat horses and a casino variant in another.
